The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) On September 9, 2021, FU, the first firing unit of the MRSAM system, a medium-range surface-to-air missile, was handed over to the IAF by the Indian Air Force.

MRSAM has been handed over to the Indian Air Force at Jaisalmer in Rajasthan to enhance India’s defense capabilities. Handing over the system to the Indian Air Force is making it important towards becoming a “self-reliant India”. It will also be useful in air-defense systems.

About MRSAM System –

The medium-range surface-to-air missile MRSAM is an advanced network-focused combat air defense system. It has been jointly developed by DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries IAI in collaboration with private and public sector as well as Indian industry with MSMEs.

It is a 4.5 meter long surface-to-air missile. The MRSAM program was contracted in February 2009. Under the agreement, the IAF decided to purchase 450 MRSAM and 18 firing units at a cost of 2 billion.

Firing Unit MRSAM –

MRSAM’s firing units include Missile, Mobile Launcher System MLS, Combat Management System CMS, Advanced Long-Range Radar, Reloader Vehicle RV, Mobile Power System MPS, Radar Power System RPS.

Importance of MRSAM system –

The MRSAM system provides point and area air protection for ground assets against threats such as fighter jets, helicopters, UAVs, sub-sonic and supersonic cruise missiles and unguided munitions. The system is capable of reaching multiple targets in a range of up to 70 km. It is supported by an indigenously developed rocket motor and control system that helps to achieve high mobility in the terminal phase.
