Narendra Damodardas Modi’s 71st birthday. He was born on 17 September 1950 in Vadnagar, India. He led the Bharatiya Janata Party to victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, after which he was sworn in as the Prime Minister of India. Prior to that, he served as the Chief Minister of the West Indian state of Gujarat from 2001-14.

Early life of Prime Minister Narendra Modi –

Modi was brought up in a small town in North Gujarat. He completed his MA in Political Science from Gujarat University, Ahmedabad. In the early 1970s, he joined the pro-Hindu Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He also set up a unit of the RSS’s student body, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. Narendra Modi has been consistently progressive in the hierarchy of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. His association with the organization greatly benefited his political career.

Modi joined the BJP in 1987, and a year later he was made general secretary of the party’s Gujarat branch. In 1990, Modi was one of the members of the BJP who participated in the coalition government in the state, and he helped the BJP win the 1995 state assembly elections. This allowed the party to form a BJP-controlled government for the first time in March. The BJP lost control of the state government in September 1996.

Chief Minister of Gujarat –

In 1995, Modi was made the Secretary of the BJP National Organization in New Delhi, and three years later he was appointed General Secretary. He held the post for another three years, replacing Keshubhai Patel, the current Chief Minister of Gujarat, in 2001. Modi contested for the first time in the by-elections of February 2002, where he won the Gujarat State Assembly seat.

His role as Chief Minister was particularly questionable during the 2002 communal riots in Gujarat. He was accused of protesting violence and setting fire to his train in Godhra city. In 2002, the United States denied him a political visa, citing his role in the 2002 riots, and in 2002, the United Kingdom criticized his role. Some of his close associates were found guilty in the 2002 incidents. He was sentenced to a long prison term.

Political career –

Modi’s repeated political success in Gujarat made him a key leader in the BJP’s hierarchy, and reunited him in the political mainstream. Under his leadership, the BJP won a significant victory in the December 2002 assembly elections, winning 127 of the 182 seats in the chamber. The BJP won the 2007 assembly elections again, a total of 117 seats and the party won the 2012 elections again with 115 seats. Both times Modi won his contest and returned as Chief Minister.

While heading the Gujarat government, Modi established a great reputation as a competent administrator, and was credited with the rapid growth of the state’s economy. In addition, his and the party’s election performance enabled Modi to become the only influential leader in the party.
