NEETI Ayoga Methanol Economy Program 2021

NEETI Ayoga prograam to reduce India’s oil imports, costs and greenhouse gas

the conversion of coal reserves and municipal solid waste into methanol is being given importance. Methanol is a low carbon hydrogen carrier fuel. It is produced from high quality coal, agricultural residues and thermal power plants. Also CO is emitted and formed from natural gas.

NEETI Ayoga Methanol Economy Program 2021-

The ‘Methanol Economy’ program aims to reduce India’s oil imports, costs and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Also, the conversion of coal reserves and municipal solid waste into methanol is being given importance. Methanol is a low carbon hydrogen carrier fuel. It is produced from high quality coal, agricultural residues and thermal power plants. Also CO is emitted and formed from natural gas.

Benefits of Methanol –

The blending of methanol 15 (ml5) in petrol will reduce pollution by 33 per cent. Also, diesel space will reduce air pollution by less than 80 percent through methanol. Methanol is burned efficiently in all internal combustion engines. Also, methanol is cheaper than petrol and diesel as well as ethanol. With its help, India can reduce fuel costs by 30 per cent by 2030. It also has various uses including transportation area, home cooking fuel and fuel cell. This requires very little change in engine vehicles and fuel distribution infrastructure.

MET NITI Commission Methanol Economy Roadmap –

MET NITI Commission Methanol Economy Roadmap 10 per cent of crude oil imports will be replaced by methanol by 2030. That being said. India annually produces 20 million tonnes (MT) of methanol at Rs 19 per liter using high quality coal, gas and biomass.

Science and technology for the production of methanol-

The Methanol Economy Research Program is being conducted by MEREP DST. These sources include Indian coal and carbon dioxide emitted from thermal power and steel plants. DST also launched the Methanol and D-Methyl Ether DME program in 2015.
